John and Linda van de Westeringh

On the outskirts of the village 'Varik' (in the dutch 'Betuwe') we find the family business of John and Linda van de Westeringh. They are the proud owners of a chrysanthemum nursery that is equipped with very modern techniques. In 2006 the company was taken over from father Henk who once started as a cultivator of fruit. Henk built his first greenhouse around 1970 and slowly but surely made a complete switch to the production of chrysanthemums. The company grew little by little and around his 16th birthday son John got involved in daily business.

The company was officialy transfered from father to son in 2009. Shortly after this moment the most significant alterations occurred. John doubled the industrial area which was necessary to meet the demands of the market. Nowadays approximately 10 staff members produce 350.000 chrysanthemums every week.

Late 2005 an opportunity occurred which put John and Linda for an important decision. Dutch breeder Dekker Chrysanthemums had developed a completely new type of "Madiba" (named after Nelson Mandela). John was asked to become the unique and only grower of this new chrysanthemum. The challenge was entered and about 5.5 years later it turned out to be the right choice. The "Madiba" (for details see www.madiba.nl) has undergone some major developments and is now available in many colors.

John and Linda have no special plans for the future. Investment and modernization of the nursery is always a good thing, no doubt about that. Important decisions depend on developments in the market. "The objective that we have as a company is certainly bright and very focused. We want to supply the market with the right quantities. Beside that we want to make sure to deliver constant quality." Linda adds on to state "The absolute most important thing is to meet the needs of the buyer."
